Product Description

A beautiful Martin Style 2-27 guitar made in 1890. This guitar has its original coffin case with the label intact, designating that the guitar case should house a style 2-27 guitar.

This fine example was professionally refinished in the mid-1970's with lacquer. Two top cracks were repaired before the guitar was refinished, and they can be seen in the photographs. One crack runs down the center seam of the top between the abalone inlaid sound hole rosette and the front of the bridge. The second top crack runs from behind the bridge (g-string bridge pin) to the lovely wood marquetry that borders the top. The white binding on the top, back, and fingerboard is made from elephant ivory. The bridge is an exact replacement of a stock ebony pyramid bridge from the 1890's. The bridge pins are not original but are white pins with abalone inlays.  Also a tailpiece had been installed at one time, and the screw holes from the tailpiece (above the end pin button), have been filled and sealed.   The ivory button tuning machines and horn end pin are original parts. Of course, the back and sides are made of beautiful Brazilian rosewood.

This guitar has had a professional neck reset. All the frets are original bar frets, and they have been reset in their slots, leveled, and crowned.

The action on this guitar is low and the nylon strings make the guitar so easy to play. Yet, the sound is beautiful and balanced, with great volume and clarity. A wonderful piece of Martin history from 127 years ago.
