martin D-18-1954
Product Description
A C.F. Martin D-18 made in Nazareth, Pa. in 1954, serial # 1407x6. It has a Sitka spruce top, mahogany back, sides, and neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge. A non-original black tolex covered hard shell case is included.
This is a well-played guitar that I sold to the current owner in 1974. After 50 years he has consigned this guitar to my store for me to sell again. He states that he has not played it in at least the last 20 years and had no repairs done to it except for removing the original Kluson tuning machines (included with this sale) and replacing them with Grover 102C Rotomatic tuners, in the late 1970's. Also a recent fret leveling was done about 2 months ago. The frets are original and have plenty of life left. There is some minor wear to the fingerboard between the nut and second fret between the 4th and 3rd string, and the 3rd and 2nd string. The original finish has lots of honest playing wear with many scratches and dings on all surfaces. I believe the pickguard is original. The bridge and ivory nut are also original.
Before he purchased the guitar in 1974, another shop had done a neck reset, repaired a crack on either side of the endpin, and replaced the saddle with a bone saddle. Also a pickguard crack on the outer edge of the pickguard was repaired, a common issue with older Martin guitars. The neck is straight, and the height of the strings above the 12th fret is 7/64" and 5/64".
The guitar sounds great considering it has not been played for so long. It is very loud with a strong bass and mid-range response and clear bright treble. Once the guitar gets played over the next month after purchase, it should open up even more and sound even better. This player D-18 will not disappoint.
